Four steps to get started

01

Know the tests

You don't need every exam; just the right one at the right time. The PSAT is low-stakes practice; the SAT and ACT are what colleges review.

02

Start with the PSAT

Take the PSAT if your school offers it in 8th–10th grade to learn the format. PSAT/NMSQT junior year can open National Merit opportunities.

03

Choose SAT vs. ACT

Colleges treat both equally. Take a full practice test of each, then compare scores with our ACT–SAT conversion chart and SAT vs ACT guide to see where you shine.

04

Set a goal and study consistently

Research the middle 50% at your target schools, pick a goal score using our score guides, and follow a 1- or 3-month study plan. Small daily sessions beat cramming.

Set your goal score

Look at the middle 50% score range for schools on your list, aim for the top of that band, and know when a retake is worth it.

Pick a sprint if test day is close or if you're retesting, or a longer plan if you have ambitious goals and/or more time to prepare.
